When David asked me to take a portrait of him for the cover of his CD, little did I realise what an emotional journey I was to become part of. David had been playing cello his whole life and was extremely highly regarded in the classical music world. He was the lead cellist in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and had plans to record the Bach Cello Suites, when he was diagnosed with a chronic skin condition relating to his fingers which would soon prevent him from playing. So, when he came for his portrait session, he told me the CD would be his last recording and he wanted the cover to include his beloved cello. We came up with a concept, and David brought with him years of old cello strings which he had kept. We spent ages hanging them up in my studio and kept our good humour as they kept collapsing around us! I couldn’t be happier for David for his well deserved success with this recording – he really is a huge talent and an incredibly lovely person. Since stopping playing the cello, David is now spending more time on his other passion of conducting and is also the Head of Strings at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
